How shipping units can help you save costs
Let's say you sell water bottles, and each individual bottle is packed in a box, and these individual boxes are packed in an outer box of 4. This means you have two possible shipping units:
- A single bottle
- A pack of 4 bottles (outer box holds 4 bottles)
Often, the second shipping unit is forgotten, resulting in higher costs when ordering 4 bottles than necessary. Instead of 4 picks, only one would be required. You also benefit from lower inbound costs, as fewer handling steps are needed.
In the following sections, you will learn how to add packaging units to reduce your costs.
Single-variety master cartons and master pallets can be created for each item in the article base data within the Connector. You can find this option within the packaging unit section of the base data for an individual SKU.
Creation in the Connector
Select the Packaging Units section within the SKU in the article base data in the Connector under Inventory → Articles.
- A carton can be created with the number of individual units per carton.
- A pallet can be created with the number of individual units per pallet.
For each carton or pallet, a separate barcode is also defined.
Single Items and Packaging Units must have unique barcodes to avoid errors in our inbound and picking processes. We do not reimburse invoicing or shipping errors resulting from non-unique barcodes on packaging units.
Inbound / Outbound
Single SKU cartons and pallets can now be scanned directly during inbound and stored as a single box or pallet.
If the quantity of a packaging unit — or a multiple thereof — is ordered, the master carton or master pallet can also be scanned directly during outbound.
Only one carton packaging unit and one pallet packaging unit can exist, so master units must always be delivered with the same number of units inside.
A barcode must be attached to the outside of each packaging unit.
If no packaging units have been created, even though master units are delivered, individual picks will be calculated both during inbound and outbound.
